Burbot Strategy and Tips

Strategy: Burbot are caught in the summer and through the ice in the winter.  When fishing for burbot use a baited 2/0 or 4/0 single hook with a sinker 18 to 24 inches above the hook.   Cast the bait and let the weight sink to the bottom.  When fishing through the ice, jig a large spoon, tipped with fresh bait, 6 to 12 inches off the bottom.  Another popular method is a tip-up baited with herring.

Tip: The easiest way to clean a burbot is to hang it by its head and cut the skin around the neck.  Once you have finished cutting, pull the skin down hard to the tail.  To remove the fins use a pair of pliers.  At this point it can be filleted or left whole with the head removed.
