Mallard, duck in flight.

Mallard Duck Strategy and Tips

Strategy: Setup your blind and decoys with the wind behind you, as ducks always land into the wind.  Other ducks feel comfortable around mallards, so you can use your mallard decoys and calls on them.  Puddle ducks spread out when they rest, so you can spread out your decoys as well.  Remember to leave a landing zone in between the decoys.  A duck blind does not have to be a solid material; it only needs to break up your outline.

Tip: The weather conditions are very important to consider when duck hunting, to determine their activity levels.  Hunting in conditions causing low visibility (such as light snow, drizzle, or fog) makes ducks fly low in shooting range.  A dropping barometer, cold temperatures, precipitation, overcast skies, and wind cause ducks to be active.  Sunny weather causes the ducks to move around early or late in the day, but they will remain stationary in midday.
