Muskrat Strategy and Tips
Strategy: When using a foothold trap, locate a muskrat mound and cut a plug out of it. Place your trap inside the mound. Wait 4 to 12 hours before checking it. When using a Conibear trap, locate a mound and find the underwater entrance. Do this by moving your boot around the edge. You will feel a small depression leading to the entrance. Place your boot’s toe up to the hole to locate it. Now place the Conibear 110 over the hole. Make sure that it is stabilized and wired to a stake in the ground, so that it cannot be knocked over.
Tip: Muskrats with the best fur are trapped during the winter or spring. Prime pelts have a yellowish skin color during drying. Muskrats trapped in early autumn will have dark skin when dried.
