Pink Salmon Animal Information

Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) - A.K.A. Humpy, Autumn Salmon.  The Pink is the smallest of all salmon species.  While it can’t match the strength and size of its counterparts, the Pink more than makes up for it with its shear numbers.  Tens of millions enter coastal waters each year.  Fished on lightweight to medium weight rods, Pinks can put a smile on even the most disgruntled fisherman, with undulating bursts of energy up and down the stream snapping lines as if they were old shoestrings.  Fresh from the sea, Pinks have silver sides with black spots on a blue back and tail.  Spawning males turn brown to black with a white belly and develop a pronounced hump on their backs.  Hence the name humpy.  The spawning females turn olive green with a white belly.  The average Pink weighs around three to five pounds with a few exceptions over 10 pounds.
