Pacific Razor Clam Strategy and Tips

Strategy: Clam beds are exposed on any minus tide around two hours before and two hours after low tide.  You will see the dimples or indentations in the sand, from the clams withdrawing their siphons.  Dig beside the dimple, on the ocean side, parallel to the beach.  Insert your hand in the hole, digging down towards shore.  When you feel the top of the shell, gently work the clam out trying not to break the shell.

Tip: Soak your clams in a bucket of clean seawater for a couple of hours.  This allows the clam to purge the sand from its neck and gills.  Do not disturb the bucket during this time, or the clams will remain withdrawn in their shells.  Scissors and a paring knife work great for cleaning the clams.
