Red Salmon Strategy and Tips
Strategy: Reds are plankton feeders by nature and must be teased and aggravated into striking. With your polarized sunglasses on, cast a fly passing it just in front of the sockeye’s kype. The sockeye will open his mouth to catch it. The take is usually gentle, so you really have to get the feel for it. This technique is best used in clear water, where the fish can see the lure coming.
Tip: Use the flippin’ technique in areas where fish are near the shore and moving quickly upstream. Make sure you check your line and flies for damage every 15 casts. If you use too much weight with your lure it will be constantly stuck in the rocks and will make for a poor drift. Your fly should trail your weight by 3 to 5 feet.
