Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) - Thunder erupts from out of no where and catches you by surprise, sending your heart into overdrive. You look up to see a blur of wings, twisting and turning through the trees, as if shot from a cannon. Somehow your senses take over, you swing your gun in an arc to catch up with the blur. Lightning flashes as you pull the trigger. Wings fold as the bird plummets to the ground. Elation overwhelms you! All this within five seconds! WOW! That’s ruffed grouse hunting, fast and exhilarating. The ruffed grouse is the most widely distributed game bird in North America found throughout the United States and Canada. It is a powerful flyer reaching speeds of 35-50 miles per hour within seconds. The average grouse has a wingspan of 24 inches and weighs one and a half pounds.
