Ruffed Grouse Strategy and Tips

Strategy:  To flush a Grouse, walk along edges of cover or as they are sometimes called transition zones.  These can be where a forest meets the swamp, or an old growth forest meets a new growth forest, or where a clearing meets the forest.  When walking these edges of cover, be sure to stop frequently and listen.  This makes the Grouse nervous. They may give themselves away by walking, peeping or a short flutter to a branch up above.  Other good spots to try are old logging roads, power lines, isolated islands in the middle of swamps, and the edges of creeks and rivers.

Tip:  Ruffed Grouse usually fly no more than 100 yards after being flushed.  So, if you don’t get a shot off or just plain miss, keep a keen eye on where it lands and you should get another chance.
