Silver Salmon Animal Information

Silver Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) - A.K.A.  Coho.  Pound for pound no other salmon species can match the surging, twisting, jumping mass of muscles and scales delivered by the feisty Silver Salmon.  Full of fury and just looking for a fight, the coho is a favorite among salmon fisherman, because of its willingness to smash just about any lure tossed in front of it.  Followed up by dazzling aerial acrobatics and drag sizzling tailwalks.  The stocky silver is the second largest salmon species, behind the mighty King, and is sometimes confused with smaller kings.  They can be told apart by their gums.  The Silver’s gums are white, while the King’s are black.  When fresh from the sea, they have silver flanks with black spots on a bluish green back.  Spawning adults turn dark red with a green head and sport a hooked kype with sharp teeth.  The average silver weighs between 8-15 pounds with a few over the 25 pound mark.
